Training
It doesn’t matter how good the equipment. If it’s not installed, used or maintained correctly, it will never perform to the specification. This applies to most things, but in the world of Instrumentation & Monitoring this statement is particularly relevant to ensure good quality data, for better informed decision making. Throughout my years in this industry, I’ve found this to be a common issue with the so-called basic systems such as inclinometers or piezometers, which are perceived to be simple to install and monitor. For this reason, operators often miss out on formal training and are just left ‘learn on the job’. Meaning bad habits are frequently passed from one employee to the next and data quality continues to suffer.
I’ve previously run half day training courses in best practice for installing and reading manual inclinometers, for several Network Rail regions and their contractors. Which saw a significant improvement on data quality.
